It has been strongly discussed by the current administration of PBA that they should sell the land that is under Lakeview and Flagler Towers. This is ridiculous. Have we not learned from the past? Are we to become more land locked than we already are? George Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Look to the past to guide our future.
In the 80's, property next door to Johnson Hall was placed on the market for around 1.5 million. PBA could not afford to buy it and so it was sold to someone else. A couple of years later, PBA tried to get it back. The price tag was 8 million and we lost it for good. In the 90's we used Flagler Gardens (now Samaritan Gardens) as a men's dorm but did not buy it when we had the chance because it was not part of the MASTER PLAN. It was sold to FBC WPB and now PBA is paying again to lease half of it to house students. Must we repeat it again. Once the land from Towers and Lakeview are gone, it won't be back.
The reasoning for the sale is to pay for new buildings, high rise buildings. You have to ask the question though, where are you going to build it? Tear down Borbe Hall and Weyenberg? Where are you planning to hold classes? Where are professors going to be officed? You think you have space issues and parking issues now? For the year and a half that this building is going to take to complete, where are they going to move things? Also, when you sell Lakeview and Towers, where do you plan to house all those students?
It just doesn't make sense. If you agree, chime in. Let us know your views. Our hope is to gain enough Alumni support and outrage that we can take this to the one group that could actually do something about it, The Trustees.
